Caring for the Environment

Gardening teaches children how to care for the environment. One way children can care for the environment is by planting cone flowers which help to save our bee population. Cone flowers provide bees with nectar and pollen that they need to feed their colonies. Bees are one way flowers reproduce, bees spread their pollen from one cone flower to another. Help save our environment and plant bee friendly plants in your garden!

Eating Healthy

Planting your own vegetables teaches children about eating healthy. Making healthy food choices is important for brain and body development. It can often be hard to get children to eat vegetables  but by having them grow their own they are excited about what they have created. This excitement leads them to eating what they have created.

Teaching Patience

Gardening with children is a great way to teach them patience. Young children are used to immediate gratification; however, gardening is often a slow process. Children have to learn to be patient when waiting for their flowers and vegetables to grow. The moment the flower or vegetable sprouts makes the wait worth it!

Gardening with children engages their senses and helps children to develop and recognize them without even realizing. They can feel the texture of soil, seeds, flower and petals. Start off small, try a greenhouse dome. Everything is included in the kit and the instructions allow this to be done with children of all ages.

What you need:
  • Popsicle Sticks
  • Glue
  • String
  • Birdseed
What to do:
  1. Make the base by laying out Popsicle stick to create a base for the feeder.
  2. Once the base is laid out, add glue to two sticks and lay them the opposite way. For additional support you can place a few more in the middle.
  3. Flip the base over and add to sticks along the edge in the opposite direction.
  4. Add glue to the corners and continue to add Popsicle sticks overlapping the previous layer.
  5. Continue to add ticks until the feeder reaches the height that you would like.
  6. Cut two pieces of string about 1 foot in length.
  7. Put the string through the bottom slats then tie all four ends in a knot.
  8. Add bird seed and hang for the birds to enjoy!
